New Zealand is on my list of countries in the world to see at least once and there are so many reasons for this! It’s a beautiful landscape, with so much to see and do, treks to enjoy and adventures to be had. There are lots diverse places in New Zealand, but here are the top ten places to visit in this extraordinary country.
10 Places to Visit in New Zealand
Queenstown
Not only one of the best places in New Zealand, but one of the best in the world, Queenstown is the epitome of New Zealand. If you are an adrenaline junkie there is no better place than Queenstown, where you can skydive, bungee jump, mountain bike and a whole lot more!
Wellington
If you’re looking for a quirky city by the sea, Wellington is the place to visit. Stroll through the streets of pop-up shops, markets, and independent boutiques. Wellington also boasts more restaurants per square meter than NYC — 60% of travelers say they gain at least two kilos on holiday and if you visit Wellington you are likely to be in that 60%!
Hobbiton
Whether you are a Lord of the Ring fan or not, Hobbiton is certainly worth a visit. Explore the tiny houses and grab a beer at The Green Dragon Inn — this is a New Zealand bucket-list destination for sure. After all, who wouldn’t want to feel like a Hobbit for a day?!
Hokitika Gorge
The blue of this water has to be seen to be believed! It’s beautiful place to walk around on one of the trails, although if you do decide to go for a dip in the gorge be warned that it’s not as lovely as it might look — there can be strong currents and it’s incredibly cold, too. Probably best to settle for taking pictures.
Cape Palliser
Head to the coast at Cape Palliser and enjoy the drive through the Rimutakas, which is an adventure in itself! The beaches here are rugged and if you’re lucky you will spot some seals relaxing in the sun. For a stunning view, be sure to climb up to the lighthouse (although be prepared for a whole lot of stairs!)
Mount Maunganui
Regularly named one of the best beaches in the country due to the stunning turquoise water and soft white sands. This seaside town is full of super cool cafes and restaurants, and if you hike to the top of the mount you will be rewarded with breathtaking views.
Bay of Islands
This region of over 140 islands is ideal for anyone who enjoys water sports, sailing or fishing. Head over to the imaginatively named Hole in the Rock, which you can sail through, and keep your eye out for dolphins and whales when you’re on the water too!
Rotorua
There is nowhere quite like Rotorua; a town sat on top of a volcanic plate, with exploding geysers, craters, hot springs, and colorful lakes. The smell of sulfur will always bring you back to this incredible town.
Waiheke Island
This amazing island has palm trees, beautiful coasts, and some incredible vineyards. It really is paradise! Be sure to check out at least one of the vineyards, as each one offers extras such as lawn games to enjoy. Make sure you treat yourself to a bottle of wine (or two!) as you watch the sunset over the stunning views.
Auckland
Not only the largest city in New Zealand but regularly voted one of the best in the world. There are so many reasons why! The Auckland Domain Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, there are many multicultural bars and restaurants in the city, and a whole host of museums and art galleries. You could never be bored in Auckland!
So they are just ten of the must-visit places in New Zealand — there are so many more we could add. You can’t just spend a week in this country, there is just too much to see and do! Where would you recommend in New Zealand? Let us know in the comments below.
